Be sure you are Plumb, level flat and square when prepping for tile

Plumb, level flat and square are essential when tiling walls. Just a quick little video to remind you that keeping true to the plane will help your tile job go faster and give you a better result with fewer problems and less time. The key to this is to true up your studs before installing your backer board, wet shimming is a good option if you are using foam board, however if that is not possible use shims to fur out your studs, or plane down any that might be bowed or proud of the wall plain. If your wall is still not flat when your cement board is installed, use a cement based patch to fix any problems that remain. When your walls are ready for tile, do the same with the tile, keep everything plumb, straight , flat and square. Start this by making sure your first row of tile is exactly right, so as you build your tile will follow the perfect base of your first row, then keep checking as you work your way up the wall.
