Today we’re looking at express companies (and stagecoach drivers & shotgun messengers) in the American West. For this week’s topic I combed through the Library of Congress’ newspaper archives from the 1800s. For secondary sources I used John Boessenecker’s superb book, ‘Shotguns & Stagecoaches: The Brave men who rode for Wells Fargo in the Wild West,’ Philip L. Fradkin’s ‘Stagecoach: Wells Fargo and the American West,’ Dr. Robert J. Chandler’s ‘Images of America’s Wells Fargo,’ and James Lynn Bartz’s ‘Company Property of Wells, Fargo & Co’s Express, 1852-1918.’ For a primary source, I utilized ‘Wells, Fargo & Co’s Express: 1882: Instructions for the Use of Agents and Employees Only.’ You’ll find the link below:
